The OSU Tradition of jumping into Mirror Lake during the OSU/Michigan Game Week has been going on for over 30 years.  It began when members of the OSU marching band led a parade of students on the traditional march around campus ending at Mirror Lake.  When the parade ended less than 100  daring students decided to take the plunge into the freezing lake, therefore beginning the Mirror Lake Jump In Tradition.  In following years the ”jump” grew in size and nearly 12,000 people last year have kept the tradition  going strong.

Although the jump is an OSU tradition, participants should take a few precautions and keep a few things in mind when going in the water:

  1. NEVER enter the lake head first, the lake is shallow, but does vary in depths.
  2. Wear Shoes!!!  Taping them on is also a good suggestion, since shoes may get stuck in the mud. (this comes from personal experience)
  3. Ask a friend to be the “DDP”  (designated dry person) that will hold on to your valuables such as cell phones, keys, and wallets.
